snow days

We've been hit by a snowstorm.
And unlike a rational human being who would stay home where it's warm and safe, I decided we needed to go out.  We shoveled three times Friday and it just kept coming!  Spending all day at home use to be a vacation for me.  Get a few things done around the house, bake something decadent, read a book, watch television.

Now, I cannot bear to be home all day. I must take M. and E. out or else I will be forced to play trains all day.  It was our library day.   Storytime, a short film, crafts and some new books.

Getting there was no picnic.  The snow was so deep it was impossible to push our beast of a stroller through the uncleared sidewalk. Which was the first time that has happened in three years. So we drove which was very slow but fine. From our parking spot the boys  "walked."  Take two steps, lie down in snow, whine, mommy picks up one boy for 4', put him down, goes back for other whining boy on ground, repeat until entering the library 20 minutes later.

The boys were entertained by the valentine's day stories, movie and valentine's card making craft.  We had a messy potty break.  Mopped up the bathroom. Teaching the boys to stand up to pee is a piddly undertaking.

We had our new books; Thomas the Train and Mortimer (by Robert Munch which is a fast favourtie over here.) Everybody refused to put their snowpants, coats etc. back on but ran SHRIEKING through the stacks.  Literally screaming and running away with me chasing them and whisper yelling "Get back here!"  So embarrassing.

Another arduous trek back to the car. The boys passed out the second their seat belts were on.  Which is terrible because that means they will not take their usual 1 1/2 -2 hour afternoon nap at home.  The time when I bake and catch up on Timothy Olyphant Justified.  When we got home we couldn't park in our driveway due to the snowplow drifts.  We had to take a crawl around the block to find a spot to park.  By the time we got out of the car it was buried.  When the boys woke up in the car they were furious.  Crying, lying on the sidewalk again.  A teenage neighbour out shoveling took pity and picked up M. off of the sidewalk for me and brought him to our door.  We usually get home from the program about 11:45, but it was 1 p.m.

I was exhausted.  Next snow day, I am staying in like all sane people.

But the days AFTER the storm were awesome.  T. was home and we went tobogganing Saturday and Sunday morning.  The sun was bright and the snow was fluffy.  And on Sunday T. spent the afternoon in the kitchen preparing a Korean feast for us.  When I got back from my soccer game (we're on a winning streak!) we ate and ate.  The boys picked up their bowls to get every drop of their seaweed soup.  And we ate lettuce wraps....M. actually asked me for more lettuce which was awesome and bizarre.

And we're ready to do it all again tomorrow!
